High-tech postboxes have now been installed at two different locations in Newton Mearns.
During the summer, postboxes at Fraser Avenue and Capelrig Road, were covered in black bin bags and removed from service.
A statement that was placed on each of the postboxes read, “Out of Service: Automated System, Coming Soon.”
Local MSP, Jackson Carlaw wrote to Royal Mail in August to seek clarity on whether the previous postboxes at Fraser Avenue and Capelrig Road would be directly replaced and with the automated versions of the metal containers made available for use at each location.
Royal Mail replied to advise that the intention was for new solar-powered postboxes to be placed on both local streets by October.
Royal Mail was able to successfully complete the installation work before the end of the month.
The upgrades will allow local residents to send and return labelled parcels through a postbox, provided the size is similar to that of a shoebox, for the first time.
At Fraser Avenue, the postbox is situated near the top of the odd-numbered section of the street and in close proximity to Fruin Avenue.
The postbox on Capelrig Road is located directly outside of Crookfur Primary School and across the road from Eastwood High.
Royal Mail are rolling out a total of 3,500 new high-tech postboxes throughout the UK.
Scottish Conservative MSP for Eastwood, Jackson Carlaw said:
“The opportunity to send letters, birthday cards, various forms and other materials by post remains critical for many local residents in Newton Mearns.
“As such, it is vital that easily accessible postboxes continue to be present on street corners, residential areas and local walking routes.
“I am very pleased to see that the new digital postboxes have been installed at Fraser Avenue and Capelrig Road.
“The upgrades mean that residents can now use their local postbox for sending and returning labelled parcels.
“Following my previous representation to Royal Mail in August, I learned that other local streets were also part of the digital rollout and more of the high-tech postboxes should be popping up in different parts of Eastwood.”
