Eastwood MSP, Jackson Carlaw has welcomed the appointment of Rishi Sunak as the UK's new Prime Minister.

Mr Sunak served as Chancellor of the Exchequer during the Covid pandemic and in this role, he provided unprecedented support to individuals and businesses during the public health crisis.

As part of the package of financial aid measures put in place, Mr Sunak introduced the world leading furlough scheme.

In East Renfrewshire, the furlough initiative protected a total number of 14,400 local jobs and the support package was in place from March 2020 to September 2021.

Mr Carlaw has said Mr Sunak is a "tried and tested" leader who delivered for East Renfrewshire and the wider UK during the once in a century pandemic.

Mr Carlaw added that this makes him the right Prime Minister to tackle the very significant economic challenges now facing the country.

Jackson Carlaw MSP for Eastwood said:

“I am delighted that Rishi Sunak is now the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and I backed him during the summer Conservative leadership contest.

“Recent weeks have been hugely challenging for the country and that is why it is so important to have a tried and tested leader like Mr Sunak who can guide us through the economic difficulties that stem from the global cost-of-living crisis.

“His track record as Chancellor during Covid proved his determination to deliver for people and businesses locally and across the UK in the most trying of circumstances.

"In East Renfrewshire, his world leading furlough scheme protected almost 15,000 jobs in the council area and this was an astonishing level of support.

"It is an individual with this track record of delivery on the economic front who we need leading the UK Government at this very difficult time and he is not going to shirk the big challenges the country is experiencing.

“He is a serious leader for serious times.”
