Jackson Carlaw MSP has registered his views on East Renfrewshire Council’s proposed local development plan as part of the local authority’s recent consultation exercise.
As part of his submission, Mr Carlaw has welcomed the absence of proposals for development on Broomburn Park after plans to develop on the greenfield site were part of the Main Issues Report published in November 2016.
Ahead of the submission deadline, East Renfrewshire Council confirmed with Mr Carlaw’s office that the local authority no longer planned to develop the site.
Mr Carlaw has been a vocal supporter of retaining Broomburn Park as greenfield and the site was confirmed as a ‘protected urban greenspace’ by East Renfrewshire Council in June 2019.
The MSP for Eastwood has expressed concerns that plans for a commercial development project at Braidbar Quarry remain under serious consideration by the council given the impact it would have on associated local infrastructure.
Should the local authority continue with its intention to remediate the site, Mr Carlaw has urged that options such as re-developing Braidbar Quarry as an open greenspace for community use should be pursued if feasible and that the plan should be amended to expressly rule out commercial development on the land.
Mr Carlaw has welcomed the intent in the plan to protect Huntly Park and the clear statement that ‘proposals for development at Huntly Park will not be supported’.
Amongst other comments, the submission from the Eastwood MSP notes that the land west of Glasgow Road in Waterfoot has not been registered as a location for future development. Mr Carlaw has robustly opposed two previous attempts to develop the land.
Jackson Carlaw MSP for Eastwood said:
“East Renfrewshire Conservatives have consistently fought to save Broomburn Park from development alongside the local community who are overwhelming opposed to the loss of this much treasured greenfield site.
“The exclusion of plans to develop Broomburn Park in the proposed local development plan is very encouraging and the site must remain protected urban greenspace indefinitely.
“Braidbar Quarry remains a hugely important issue for local people and I hold to my strongly expressed view that the site should not be remediated for the specific purpose of a commercial development project.
“The document clearly states that Huntly Park will be protected and the land must remain free from development.
“I look forward to hearing the outcome of the council’s consultation exercise in due course.”
